About Iximché
Iximché was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya kingdom from 1470 until the Spanish conquest in 1524. Unlike Tikal's jungle setting, Iximché sits in a highland pine forest at 2,260 meters. The site features four ceremonial plazas, two ball courts, and several temples. What makes Iximché special is that it's still an active ceremonial site - Maya priests regularly perform fire ceremonies here. It's an easy day trip from Antigua or Guatemala City and far less crowded than Tikal.
