About Monterrico
Monterrico is Guatemala's premier beach destination, featuring dramatic volcanic black sand beaches on the Pacific coast. The town is surrounded by the Monterrico-Hawaii biotope, a protected mangrove ecosystem home to caimans, iguanas, and sea turtles. From July to December, sea turtle conservation projects allow visitors to release baby turtles into the ocean. The waves are strong (not ideal for swimming) but the sunsets, seafood, and relaxed vibe make it a perfect weekend escape from Antigua or Guatemala City.
