About Santiago Atitlán

Santiago Atitlán is the most indigenous town on Lake Atitlán, maintaining deep Tz'utujil Maya traditions. The town is famous for Maximón (also called Rilaj Mam), a syncretic deity worshipped with offerings of cigars, rum, and candles. The Friday market is one of the most authentic in Guatemala. Santiago also has a powerful history as the first community to expel the military during Guatemala's civil war.
