About Chichicastenango
Chichicastenango, known as 'Chichi', hosts one of the most spectacular markets in the Americas every Thursday and Sunday. K'iche' Maya vendors from surrounding villages descend on the town to sell textiles, masks, ceramics, produce, and traditional medicine. The Santo Tomás Church, built atop a pre-Columbian temple platform, hosts fascinating syncretic Maya-Catholic ceremonies with incense, flower petals, and candles. The Pascual Abaj shrine on the hillside is still used for Maya fire ceremonies.
